Work00:20Round 1 of 8

Tabata training originates from a 1996 study by Japanese researcher Dr. Izumi Tabata, who demonstrated that four minutes of high-intensity cycling — alternating 20 seconds of all-out effort with 10 seconds of rest across eight rounds — produced greater improvements in both aerobic and anaerobic capacity than an hour of moderate-intensity steady-state exercise. The protocol's power lies in its brevity and intensity: the 2:1 work-to-rest ratio keeps your heart rate elevated throughout, triggering excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) that continues burning calories long after the workout ends. Ideal movements for Tabata include bodyweight exercises like squats, burpees, push-ups, and mountain climbers, as well as kettlebell swings and sprint intervals. Because the eight rounds are completed in exactly four minutes, Tabata is the most time-efficient high-intensity protocol in widespread use. Multiple Tabata blocks can be stacked with two-minute rest periods between them for a complete 20–30 minute training session.
