Circuit training is a time-efficient workout format in which participants rotate through a series of exercise stations — typically 6 to 12 — performing each for a set duration or rep count before moving to the next with minimal rest. The defining feature of circuit training is its combination of strength and cardiovascular stimuli in a single session: by alternating between muscle groups and keeping rest short, heart rate stays elevated while each muscle group recovers as another is being worked. This approach was popularized by R.E. Morgan and G.T. Anderson at the University of Leeds in 1953 and has since become one of the most widely practiced training formats in commercial gyms, military fitness programs, and home workout routines worldwide. A well-designed circuit sequences push movements (push-ups, shoulder press), pull movements (rows, pull-ups), lower body exercises (squats, lunges), and core work so that no two consecutive stations fatigue the same muscle group. Circuit training is highly scalable: the same timer protocol works for beginner bodyweight circuits, intermediate dumbbell circuits, and advanced barbell or kettlebell complexes. The format is especially effective for general physical preparedness (GPP) and fat loss due to its combination of volume, density, and metabolic demand.

Choose a preset workout (Tabata, HIIT, boxing rounds, etc.) or set your own work time, rest time, and round count using the custom fields. Your settings are saved between sessions.

  2. 2

Click Start. The timer counts down the work interval with a color indicator, then automatically switches to the rest period with an audio cue. Round progress is displayed throughout.
