What is the Business Model Canvas?

The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is a strategic management template created by Alexander Osterwalder. It visualizes an organization's business model on a single page using nine interconnected building blocks. It is widely used by startups and established companies alike to describe, design, and pivot their business strategy.

What is the difference between BMC and Lean Canvas?

The Lean Canvas was adapted from the BMC by Ash Maurya for early-stage startups. It replaces four blocks — Key Partners, Key Activities, Key Resources, and Customer Relationships — with Problem, Solution, Key Metrics, and Unfair Advantage. The Lean Canvas is more hypothesis-driven and suited to testing assumptions before building a full business.
