The Lean Canvas was created by Ash Maurya as a focused, actionable adaptation of the Business Model Canvas for lean startups. Where the BMC asks 'How does the business work?', the Lean Canvas asks 'What are the riskiest assumptions I need to test?'. It replaces key partners, key activities, key resources, and customer relationships with problem, solution, key metrics, and unfair advantage — blocks that force founders to articulate the specific pain they solve, the minimum feature set that addresses it, the one metric that measures traction, and the moat that protects them once they find product-market fit. Use the Lean Canvas for a new venture, a new product line, or whenever you're testing an unproven hypothesis before committing to full development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lean Canvas used for?

The Lean Canvas is used by founders and product teams to document and test the riskiest assumptions of a new business or product idea. It forces a concise articulation of the problem, the solution, and the unique value proposition before significant resources are spent.

What is the 'Unfair Advantage' block in the Lean Canvas?

The Unfair Advantage block describes something your business has that cannot easily be copied or bought by a competitor. Examples include exclusive data, a proprietary algorithm, a well-known personal brand, a network effect, or a regulatory moat. It is the hardest block to fill in honestly — if you cannot name one, that is a risk to address.

What are 'Key Metrics' in the Lean Canvas?

Key Metrics are the one or two numbers that tell you whether your business is healthy. For a SaaS product this might be Monthly Recurring Revenue and churn. For a marketplace it might be Gross Merchandise Volume and take rate. Focusing on a single key metric helps teams avoid vanity metrics and make focused decisions.

How is the Lean Canvas different from the Business Model Canvas?

The Lean Canvas replaces four BMC blocks with four new ones designed for early-stage startups: Key Partners → Problem, Key Activities → Solution, Key Resources → Key Metrics, and Customer Relationships → Unfair Advantage. The remaining five blocks (Channels, Customer Segments, Value Proposition, Cost Structure, Revenue Streams) are identical in both frameworks.
