Summer officially begins at the summer solstice — the longest day of the year, when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky at solar noon. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice falls around June 20–21 each year (the exact date and time varies slightly year to year). In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed: June 20–21 is the winter solstice, and the summer solstice falls around December 21–22. The summer solstice occurs because Earth's axis is tilted approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbit around the sun. On the solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted maximally toward the sun, resulting in the most daylight hours of the year. At the Arctic Circle (latitude 66.5°N), the sun does not set at all on the summer solstice — the famous 'midnight sun.' Conversely, the Antarctic experiences 24 hours of darkness. Summer solstice celebrations have deep roots across cultures. Stonehenge in England is precisely aligned with the midsummer sunrise, suggesting its builders — thousands of years ago — considered the solstice astronomically significant. Norse midsummer (Midsommar) celebrations involve bonfires and dancing; Sweden's Midsommar is a national holiday. Indigenous peoples of North America held solstice ceremonies; the ancient Chinese observed the solstice as the 'Earth' festival. In modern times, summer solstice is celebrated with outdoor festivals, music events, sunrise gatherings, and the anticipation of the warmest months ahead.
