Eid al-Fitr (ΨΉΩΨ― Ψ§ΩΩΨ·Ψ±), meaning 'Festival of Breaking the Fast,' is one of the two major Islamic holidays (the other being Eid al-Adha). It marks the end of Ramadan β the holy month of fasting β and is celebrated on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, based on the sighting of the new crescent moon. Because the Islamic calendar is purely lunar (approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year), Eid al-Fitr shifts approximately 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, cycling through all seasons over about 33 years. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by approximately 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide through daily fasting (sawm) from dawn to sunset, intensive prayer, reading the Quran, and increased charitable giving (zakat). The spiritual discipline of Ramadan culminates with Eid al-Fitr β a three-day celebration of joy, gratitude, and community. Eid al-Fitr traditions begin with the sighting of the new moon, followed by large communal prayer services (Salat al-Eid) held in mosques and open fields. Worshippers wear new or best clothing, exchange greetings of 'Eid Mubarak' (Blessed Eid) or 'Eid Said' (Happy Eid), give Zakat al-Fitr (charity ensuring all can celebrate), share festive meals with family and friends, exchange gifts, and visit elders. Traditional foods vary by region β sheer kurma (vermicelli pudding) in South Asia, kahk (shortbread cookies) in Egypt, and maamoul (date-filled cookies) in the Levant. Eid al-Fitr is a public holiday in most Muslim-majority countries.
