Cyber Monday Countdown

Cyber Monday falls on the Monday following US Thanksgiving — making it the fourth Monday of November or the Monday after Black Friday. It was created in 2005 by the National Retail Federation's Shop.org division to encourage online shopping, capitalizing on the trend of consumers returning to work after the Thanksgiving weekend and using their high-speed office internet connections to shop online (home broadband was less common in 2005). The name 'Cyber Monday' was coined in a Shop.org press release titled 'Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year.' What began as a marketing concept became a self-fulfilling prophecy: retailers began offering deep discounts specifically on Cyber Monday, consumers responded, and the day grew into a genuine shopping phenomenon. By 2012, Cyber Monday surpassed Black Friday in online sales volume. Cyber Monday has become the single biggest online shopping day of the year in the United States. In 2023, US consumers spent over $12 billion online on Cyber Monday — the largest US online shopping day ever recorded at the time. Electronics, software, streaming services, clothing, and toys are among the most popular Cyber Monday categories. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and thousands of smaller retailers participate with coordinated promotions. The term 'Cyber Week' is now commonly used to describe the entire period from Black Friday through Cyber Monday and beyond.
